‘living with the wild: cultural perspectives from småland’

My research explores the deep connection between people and the land in Småland, Sweden—a region defined by its forests, lakes, and inherited wilderness. Many hunters here care for tracts of land passed down through generations, carrying both the privilege and responsibility of stewardship. Through photography and ethnographic work, I study and document the emotional lives of these landscapes, the men who inhabit them, and the objects that accompany them—firearms, knives, taxidermy, and heirlooms. Grounded in philosophy, anthropology, and sociology, my work examines Nordic ideals of restraint, care, and closeness to nature, revealing a quieter, more obscure kind of luxury—one rooted in rural life, memory, and respect for the living world.
